What Are The Different Types Of Pick And Place Robots?

For a variety and wide range of applications pick and place robots are being used and are made available in the market. For that purpose, these are types of pick and place robots and depending on the specific function and requirement of a company one must select this automatic pick and place machines.

Also, there are several pick and place systems available in the market that are generally configured for various kinds of products and plant layouts. As part of an automatic robotic handling system, it does not require input by the operator for picking and placing it from one place to another. A pick and place robot can help a workplace to conduct repetitive work without mistake, staining injury, worker fatigue and thereby increasing competency, productivity and efficiency.

Types of Pick and Place Robots

As mentioned earlier there are several types of pick and place robots available in the market, they are:

  • Robotic Arm : This is likely to be the most common automatic pick and place machines that come generally with 5 axis robots.  Generally, this 5 axis pick and place robot applications are for the plane and simple tasks, whereas a 6 axis robot is used for more complex applications. Pick and place functions that require twisting from the horizontal level requires 6 axis pick and place robotic arm.
  • Cartesian : Maybe after the robotic arm, this is the common pick and place robot type. It is a cheaper robot but has limited utility. This automatic picks and place machine is used mainly in industries that require injection molding machines
  • Delta : These types of robots are installed mainly in conveyors and places that generally require high-speed pick and place application.
  • Fast Pick : As the name suggests it is used in applications that need a fast pickup and placing of the items. The special feature of the fast pick robot is it has a typical cycle time of 150 cycles per minute.
  • Collaborative : The market is now flooding with these collaborative pick and place robots that can be used in a variety of ways. Of late many industries have been using it too. However, collaborative automatic pick and place machines are small and slower robots that cannot perform complex functions well, this makes their usability limited. But companies that are have just started using or trying to see the benefit of pick and place robots are often starting with these collaborative robots.

Commissioning and installing a robotic system for a company requires skilled engineers who are well-trained in automation and robot programmers along with PLC programmers, mechanical and CAD design engineers. It is these people who decide the kind of pick and place robot that will suit the business as well as the system that the enterprise would require.

Since this article gives a basic overview of the types of pick and place robots available in the market along with the systems, any business would require the engineers to assess the kind of system and automatic pick and place machines that an enterprise would require.
